During China’s advance along the Nepal and Kashmir fronts, Nehru happened to be near Nepal. When he got word of the fighting, he set aside his peace rhetoric and ordered a military response, though the troops took several days to arrive. In that gap, roughly 500 Sikhs engaged the Chinese and held the line, enabling Nehru to return safely to Delhi. Back in the capital, he reportedly said, “How can I hand power to our enemies?” The Nepal side was secured, but China captured parts of Kashmir that remain under its control.
Sikhs have consistently stepped forward with courage and selfless service—holding the line when it mattered most. Their discipline, sacrifice, and commitment to justice reflect the spirit of seva and sarbat da bhala (welfare of all). We owe deep gratitude to those who risked everything to protect lives and defend the nation.
