In an attempt to suppress the Sikh movement for their rights, the Indian government heavily persecuted the Sikh community and launched numerous operations against them. The Singh family of Kalanour was among those who faced immense hardships. The family, consisting of Bhai Balwan Singh and his three sons—Joga Singh, Ranjit Singh, and Manjeet Singh—was actively involved in the movement. Bhai Balwan Singh himself was well-known and respected in the region for his commitment to Sikh values and their struggle.
In 1988, a tragic incident unfolded when the Indian police received intelligence that some Sikh militants were hiding in Kalanour. The police began targeting the village, creating a hostile environment. They raided Bhai Balwan Singh’s house and attempted to apprehend him and his sons, but they managed to avoid capture. During this period, the police’s brutal tactics intensified, including torturing villagers to extract information about the militants. Bhai Balwan Singh was forced to abandon his home and live in hiding.
Despite these hardships, Bhai Balwan Singh and his sons continued their commitment to the Sikh cause. However, the police fabricated charges against them, labeling them as threats to national security. Bhai Balwan Singh was eventually captured, subjected to inhumane torture, and imprisoned for several days. He was released only after paying a hefty bribe. The harassment continued even after his release, leading to significant financial and emotional suffering for the family.
One fateful day, an incident occurred in Kalanour where the police clashed with Sikh militants. The police accused Bhai Balwan Singh and his sons of harboring the militants and providing them support. Bhai Balwan Singh was arrested again, and the police humiliated him in front of the entire village. Despite the lack of evidence, the authorities destroyed his property and forced him to live in constant fear and insecurity.
Bhai Balwan Singh’s sons, Joga Singh and Ranjit Singh, also faced severe persecution. They were declared fugitives, forcing them to leave the village. Ultimately, they sacrificed their lives for the Sikh cause, while the youngest son, Manjeet Singh, continued to fight for justice for his family and the Sikh community.
The Singh family of Kalanour is remembered for their unwavering dedication to Sikh principles and their fight against oppression, making immense sacrifices for the Sikh cause.
